In the global market for high-barrier packaging, Evoh (ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer) has earned a reputation for delivering outstanding protection against gas permeation. In the U.S., plastics used in contact with food are regulated under 21 CFR Part 177, which covers “indirect food additives.” Section 177.1360 sets out the specific parameters for EVOH plastic, including the allowable ethylene-to-vinyl alcohol ratio, compatible food types, temperature resistance, and permitted additives.

If an EVOH formulation and its intended application fall within these criteria, it is considered compliant for lawful use in food-contact materials.

That said, the monomers and additives used to produce EVOH pellets must be registered, and the final material must comply with any restrictions and SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) provisions.

Medical Device Packaging – One manufacturer integrated EVOH as a mid-layer barrier in sterile barrier systems, meeting oxygen barrier requirements and passing ISO 11607 and post-EO sterilization testing. As the packaging did not directly touch pharmaceuticals or tissues, approval was based mainly on food-contact standards, reducing the regulatory process significantly.

 

Automotive Fuel Systems – EVOH liners are highly effective in lowering fuel vapor permeation, meeting U.S. EPA and California CARB standards. Although these uses do not fall under FDA or (EU) No 10/2011 regulations, REACH substance restrictions must still be observed for EU market entry.
