Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic resin renowned for its exceptional gas barrier properties — particularly against oxygen, carbon dioxide, aromas, and organic solvents. As a plastic raw material, EVOH is almost never used alone; instead, it functions as the critical inner barrier layer within multilayer coextruded film and rigid packaging structures.
The unique molecular architecture of EVOH — with its hydroxyl groups forming a dense, hydrogen-bonded network — creates an extremely tortuous path for gas molecules, resulting in oxygen transmission rates (OTR) orders of magnitude lower than standard polyolefins or PET. This makes EVOH the material of choice wherever product freshness, shelf-life extension, and contamination prevention are non-negotiable.
The ethylene content (mol%) in EVOH directly governs the balance between barrier performance and processability. Lower ethylene content delivers superior barrier but requires careful moisture management, while higher ethylene content improves melt processing and moisture resistance — a critical consideration when designing multilayer structures for humid or retort environments.
No other commercially available thermoplastic offers the combination of extreme oxygen barrier, transparency, printability, recyclability compatibility, and coextrusion processability that EVOH delivers. In a typical multilayer structure — such as PA/tie/EVOH/tie/PE — the EVOH layer may be only 5–15% of total thickness yet contributes over 99% of the oxygen barrier performance, making it the highest-value component per unit weight in the entire structure.

The global EVOH market is being reshaped by sustainability mandates, e-commerce growth, and new industrial frontiers.
Regulatory pressure across the EU, North America, and Asia-Pacific is accelerating the transition from multi-material laminates to mono-material multilayer structures. EVOH-based all-polyolefin multilayer films — where EVOH is co-extruded with compatible polyethylene layers — are emerging as a viable recyclable alternative to traditional foil-laminate packaging, enabling brands to meet Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) targets without sacrificing barrier performance.
The booming ready-to-eat and shelf-stable food sector is driving demand for EVOH grades optimized for retort sterilization (121°C+). Advanced multilayer retort pouches incorporating EVOH as the barrier layer are replacing traditional metal cans in markets from Asia to Latin America, offering lighter weight, reduced material cost, and consumer-preferred flexible formats.
EVOH's chemical inertness and compatibility with functional coatings make it an ideal substrate for active packaging systems — including oxygen scavenger layers, antimicrobial coatings, and RFID-embedded smart packaging. The convergence of EVOH barrier technology with IoT-enabled packaging intelligence represents one of the most exciting frontiers in multilayer structure design.
Beyond food packaging, EVOH is rapidly gaining ground in automotive multilayer fuel tanks and fuel hose systems, where its hydrocarbon barrier performance meets increasingly stringent global evaporative emission standards (PZEV, LEV III). The shift from metal fuel tanks to multilayer HDPE/EVOH/HDPE blow-molded tanks is a major industrial trend driving EVOH consumption in non-packaging sectors.
From fresh produce to pharmaceutical sterility, EVOH multilayer structures serve critical barrier functions across diverse industries.
Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) films with EVOH barrier layers extend the shelf life of fresh produce by 3–5× by precisely controlling O₂ and CO₂ transmission rates within the package headspace.
EVOH-based multilayer blister films and pouches provide the ultra-low OTR required for moisture-sensitive tablets, biologics, and diagnostic devices, meeting USP and EU pharmacopoeia barrier standards.
Vacuum skin packaging (VSP) and shrink bags for fresh and processed meats rely on EVOH multilayer structures to prevent oxidative rancidity, preserve color, and maintain microbial safety throughout the cold chain.
Specialized EVOH grades for agricultural mulch and greenhouse films provide UV resistance and biodegradability, reducing plastic waste while maintaining the barrier and mechanical properties required for crop protection.
EVOH multilayer films for electronic packaging deliver moisture and oxygen protection for sensitive semiconductors, PCBs, and battery components, preventing oxidation-related failures during storage and transport.
Multilayer HDPE/EVOH/HDPE fuel tanks and hose systems leverage EVOH's hydrocarbon barrier to meet global evaporative emission regulations, replacing heavier metal components with lightweight polymer solutions.
Multilayer pipes incorporating EVOH barrier layers are used in underfloor heating systems and chemical transport lines, preventing oxygen diffusion that causes corrosion in metal system components.
Next-generation recyclable multilayer structures using EVOH as a thin barrier core within mono-material polyolefin laminates are enabling the circular economy transition for flexible packaging.
